Shoulder prosthesis

English subtitled video

The shoulder prosthesis treatment at Clínica Sanza in Barcelona, consists of placing implants in the shoulder area, whose material does not cause immunological reaction and integrates with the tissues in a natural way.

The change in the appearance of the arms resulting from this operation is definitive. At Clínica Sanza, with more than 30 years dedicated exclusively to plastic surgery, we advise the patient on what would be best in his or her case, taking into account that the patient has the last word.

At Clínica Sanza we rely on the Sagrat Cor Hospital, part of the Quirónsalud group, to perform our surgical procedures.

Its prestige, facilities, medical and sanitary personnel, as well as its technology endorse it.

People who wish to increase the contour of their shoulders and cannot achieve it through exercise or sport.

Malformations or accidents that cause atrophy or poor development of one or both shoulders.

Shoulder prostheses require a meticulous technique and a correct previous evaluation of each particular case, in order to adapt the final result to the patient’s wishes, evaluating the volume, the projection, the physical constitution and the quality of the skin, among other factors. From this primary evaluation, the type of prosthesis and the volume that best suits the patient’s wishes will be defined.

A single implant can be placed under the deltoid or implants can be placed in each shoulder to mark the anterior, lateral and posterior muscle belly of each shoulder.

The surgical procedure may vary in terms of where the implant will be inserted, as well as the anatomical plane in which it will be placed. Once the implant is placed, the incision is sutured and drains are placed, which will remain in place for 24 hours.

At Clínica Sanza, we usually place the implants in the armpits and under the deltoid muscle.

This procedure can be done in conjunction with other types of prostheses such as triceps, biceps or pectoral prostheses.

Improve the appearance of the arms is a surgery that is increasingly requested by patients, depending on the case we can do several procedures. The use of prosthesis; biceps or triceps, liposuction or lipolaser, brachioplasty or arm lift. That is, we can increase the volume or decrease it or remove flaccidity.

What are the regions of the arms where I can place prostheses?

Shoulder, Brachial Biceps, Brachial Triceps and Pectoralis, the prostheses correct these deficits giving an appearance of greater muscle volume.

What material are the implants made of?

Arm implants are made of a silicone compound just like breast implants, but more cohesive. Its consistency is very similar to that of exercised muscle.

When to think about arm liposuction? or lipolaser?

It is recommended to perform liposuction on those arms with excess fatty tissue to improve their appearance. As long as there is excess skin that can be satisfactorily retracted. When cellulite is present it is advisable to perform lipolaser.

When should I think about an arm lift or brachioplasty?

When there is an excess of skin, caused by a significant flaccidity that cannot be retracted by another procedure such as lipolaser. Patients who have lost a lot of weight or advanced age or fragile skin due to sun exposure and/or smoking.

After surgery the patient may feel some discomfort with mild pain. These discomforts are controlled by the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs. The bandage will be left on for the first 24 hours, but swelling may persist for some time, as well as some bruising.

What type of anesthesia is used in arm surgery?

Arm implant surgery, brachioplasty or arm liposuction is performed under local anesthesia and sedation. This means that the patient will remain asleep during the procedure, absolutely calm, and will not perceive any painful stimuli. We will leave a bandage for 24 hours and drains if the case requires it. The arm lift is also local or sedation.

What is the duration of the intervention? Is hospitalization necessary?

The intervention lasts 2 hours. It is on an outpatient basis unless otherwise requested by the patient. Depending on the number of prostheses to be placed and the size of the liposuction or brachioplasty, we will advise outpatient or 24h admission.

Are the scars visible?

In liposuction and lipolaser of the arms we leave 3 to 4 mm invisible spots. All pectoral, shoulder, biceps and triceps prostheses are done through the axillary route. A 5-6cm scar in the axilla concealed in the axillary crease. The arm lift does leave a long scar up to the elbow on the inside of the arm and sometimes also an axillary scar.
