Differences between hyaluronic acid and botolinum toxin

Many times we receive patients in our office and emails from patients who ask us the difference between the two treatments.

Almost everyone has heard of botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid and it is normal for them to get confused.

Let’s explain the differences.

Botulinum toxin is a vaccine that we use in small doses to paralyze the muscles that cause wrinkles. For example, forehead wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles that the patient does not wish to have.

When we talk about a vaccine or botulinum toxin, many patients are afraid that it may be toxic or that they will be paralyzed and afraid.

Of course it is a very safe treatment that is done in consultation.

In 30 years of experience and more than 30,000 patients treated with botulinum toxin we have never had any allergies or side effects. Therefore, yes, we can say that this treatment is very safe, as well as effective.

There is no device, cream, or anything else in the world that can improve these expression wrinkles any more than botulinum toxin.

That is why it is used all over the world and many doctors use it. Mainly plastic surgeons for two reasons: one because we are the first to use it and we have more experience, and two because we have greater knowledge of facial muscle anatomy, which allows us more accurate and more effective results.

Then we talk about how the procedure is done.

Hyaluronic acid is a protein found under the skin and is the protein that gives elasticity and smoothness to our face. This protein is made by cells called fibroblasts.

With the years, stress, sun, tobacco, etc, these cells are dying with which the skin stops having hyaluronic acid and wrinkles.

To avoid wrinkles and improve skin quality we use hyaluronic acid. Not to remove expression wrinkles, which, as mentioned above, are avoided by paralyzing the facial muscles with botulinum toxin.

Hyaluronic acid has been around for about 30 years, but it has improved a lot in the last few years so that today it is not necessary to carry out allergy tests as we did years ago. The protein in hyaluronic acid no longer comes from animals but is synthetic and therefore does not cause allergies.

Just as the botulinum toxin remains the same 30 years ago, the hyaluronic acid has changed a lot and for years we have different densities to make different treatments, which are always in consultation as well, like the botulinum toxin.

Different types of hyaluronic acid

  1. Very low density
    • Finite wrinkles
    • Skin hydration
  2. Low density
    • A little deeper facial wrinkles
    • Dark circles
  3. Moderate density
    • Used for lip fillers
    • Furrow, deeper wrinkles
  4. High density
    • Project cheekbones, jaw, chin, temples
    • Rinomodeling

How is botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid placed?

Both treatments have to be injected with a very fine needle to avoid pain and bruising.

It is impossible that it will be effective if it is not injected.

How will I look later?

After injecting small doses of botulinum toxin you will not notice anything, you can go to work and you can’t see anything. The effect will begin to be noticed after 5-15 days. You will see that the wrinkles are disappearing.

After injecting hyaluronic acid we can have 2 different results depending on the density:

– If we use density 1 or 2 you will not notice anything until the next day that the quality of the skin or the dark circles is improving.

– If you use density 3 or 4, i.e. denser, then you will see the result immediately. You will leave the consultation with the wrinkles disappeared, or the lips more turgid or thick, or with cheekbones, chin or jaw more marked. In other words, wherever we infiltrate it, we will see the effect immediately.

Are the treatments definitive?

No.

Botulinum toxin can last from 4 to 6 months depending on the patient. If it lasts less time we advise not to get more, because being a vaccine can create antibodies, and stay vaccinated, and no matter how much we put your body is going to undo it.

So if you like the result you can only repeat it 2 times a year, maximum 3 times a year, depending on whether it lasts 6 months or 4 months.

Density 1 hyaluronic acid (vitamins) has an effect we call “flash”.

You will see more beautiful skin the next day or the same day, but the effect will last about 15-30 days. In these cases we recommend 4 sessions to make the effect last longer.

Density 2 hyaluronic acid for dark circles and fine wrinkles will last about 1 year.

Density 3 and 4 hyaluronic acid will also last about 1 year.

If you like the results you can repeat them every year.

If you wish we can use other techniques that allow us the same result but already lasting for life or many years, such as lipofilling, facial prostheses and other surgical technique, not consultation.

I hope this article has helped you to get to know better what these two words are that we hear spoken in meetings of friends, television, magazines, social networks, etc … (Botox and hyaluronic acid)

Botulinum toxin does not equal hyaluronic acid.
