Cheek augmentation
Video subtitled in English
Three different techniques are available for cheek augmentation: Two are with plastic surgery and one without surgery. The result is not the same in all three cases:
- Cheek augmentation with prosthesis
- Cheek augmentation with own fat (Cheek Lipofilling)
- Cheek augmentation with hyaluronic acid
We explain what each of these operations consists of so that you can choose the most suitable one for you.
Clínica Sanza in Barcelona, is a reference center in cheek surgery.
Cheek augmentation with prosthesis
The cheek augmentation operation with prosthesis in Barcelona is a cosmetic operation that can improve and modify the physiognomy of the face, and it must be done well. This means that the proper process is as follows:
The first step is to take the patient’s measurements and advise him or her to order custom-made prostheses. These prostheses are manufactured specifically according to the patient’s expressed taste. Subsequently, by means of a plastic surgery operation, they are placed in the area of the cheekbones or malar bones.
These prostheses are made of a material that does not cause an immunological reaction and integrates with the tissues in a natural way.
Cheek augmentation with own fat (Cheek Lipofilling)
Lipofilling?
Before proceeding, it is important to understand what lipofilling is!
I advise you to read
this article on our website
where it is explained in detail. It is important …
If you have a good understanding of what lipofilling is, continue on to this section of the website.
Cheek augmentation with your own fat is technically known as cheek lipofilling. It consists of a small liposuction of an area where the patient has excess fat (usually the abdominal area or legs), we process it to purify it and then infiltrate it into the cheeks.
It is an alternative to cheek filler with biocompatible substances or cheek augmentation with prostheses.
Cheek augmentation with hyaluronic acid
If you are not in the mood for surgery and want something quicker and cheaper, then consider a cheek filler with hyaluronic acid.
The treatment consists of increasing the volume of the cheekbone area with temporary substances, such as hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite.
These substances are infiltrated with injections, they do not require surgery and are performed in the same office. They are absolutely biocompatible, do not produce any type of rejection or subsequent problems in the patient’s body, they are applied immediately, the result is seen instantly and they are economical. This is why many people choose it.
It is important to keep in mind that they are not forever, the duration will depend on the patient, it is not the same for everyone.
How long do the results of injecting hyaluronic acid into the cheekbones last?
The duration of hyaluronic acid once injected into the cheekbones can vary depending on several factors. In general, the duration of the results can range from 12 to 18 months or even longer if the product is of high quality.
Hyaluronic acid is a resorbable material, which means that over time it is broken down and metabolized naturally in the body. The rate of resorption can be affected by the concentration and cross-linking of the hyaluronic acid used, as well as the individual’s location and metabolism.
In areas that are not as exposed to movement, such as the cheekbones, the results can last longer than in areas with movement, such as the lips.
It is important to keep in mind that the duration of results may also be affected by post-treatment care and lifestyle habits of the individual.
How is hyaluronic acid injected into the cheekbones?
Hyaluronic acid is carefully injected into the skin layers using a fine needle or cannula. Sometimes several punctures are necessary to distribute the product well and obtain an optimal result.
Don’t just go anywhere. It is essential to keep in mind that learning how to inject hyaluronic acid safely and effectively requires proper training and in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy, injection techniques and the appropriate choice of hyaluronic acid for each patient. Performing these injections without proper training and experience can have risks, such as injury, swelling, bruising or allergic reactions in the patient.
At Clínica Sanza we use the best hyaluronic acid we know, the one that lasts longer, the one that gives the best results.
Beware of saving money at a low-cost center, the result will not last.
If you do not like the result, it is reversible
One of the fears of people who come to cosmetic medicine offices asking for a cheek filler is that they will not like the result. If you are afraid that your cheekbones have too much volume or if you don’t like the shape, it can be left as it was. Lhe most important thing with this treatment is that the result is natural and matches your face.
HYALURONIDASE ! this magic word is your peace of mind.
It is an enzyme that has the ability to degrade hyaluronic acid. In the field of aesthetic medicine, hyaluronidase is used to dissolve hyaluronic acid in cases where you do not like the result, due to complications or adverse reactions caused by hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.
Can I socialize or work the next day?
Yes, you do not need to rest unless you have a profession with risk of hitting the area. What we advise is to avoid going to the gym for the first two days.
You may have small bruises that go away in 24 to 48 hours and minimal swelling.
Differences between filling with Calcium Hydroxyapatite and Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxyapatite are two substances used in aesthetic treatments to increase cheekbone volume. The differences between the two are explained below:
1. Composition and mode of action:
-
-
Hyaluronic acid: It is a molecule naturally present in our skin and is used to moisturize and restore volume in the treated area. It provides natural and temporary results, as it is gradually absorbed by the body. It is applied to the superficial layers of the skin.
-
Calcium hydroxyapatite: It is a collagen biostimulator, which means that it promotes the production of collagen by skin cells. In addition to providing volume, it also has a tightening effect and contributes to the firmness of the most superficial layers of the skin. The results can be long lasting due to the formation of new collagen. It is used in deeper layers of the skin.
-
2. Treatment areas:
-
-
Hyaluronic acid: Used to augment cheekbones, jawline, chin, lips, improve the appearance of scars, rejuvenate the female intimate area, correct imperfections on the back of the nose and treat fine wrinkles.
-
Calcium hydroxyapatite: Used to restore volume to facial structures, redensify the skin and provide firmness to the most superficial layers of the skin. It can be used in areas such as the cheekbones, but is not recommended for reducing wrinkles between the eyebrows and forehead.
-
3. Side effects:
-
-
Hyaluronic acid: It is a biocompatible and well-tolerated substance, so side effects are usually minimal and temporary, such as redness or swelling that disappear in a few days. As a substance found naturally in the body, it does not usually have significant contraindications.
-
Calcium hydroxyapatite: Calcium hydroxyapatite is also well tolerated, but caution should be exercised when injecting it in certain areas, such as the eye area, to avoid complications. As with hyaluronic acid, redness, swelling or bruising may occur at the application site, but these are usually temporary and mild..

Video on the difference between Botulinum Toxin and Hyaluronic Acid
People often confuse the two terms. This video explains very briefly the difference between botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid. Both are used to remove wrinkles but they are not the same, one or the other should be used depending on the wrinkle to be treated and the area of the face.

Benefits of cheek filler with hyaluronic acid
-
Restore lost volume: Over time, fat mass is lost in the center of the cheekbone, which can make the face look tired and sagging. Hyaluronic acid replenishes lost volume, providing a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
-
Improves nasolabial folds and wrinkles: Cheek filler with hyaluronic acid can help smooth the wrinkles and folds that form between the nose and the corners of the lips, known as the nasolabial fold.
-
Defines and enhances the features: By increasing the volume of the cheekbones, definition and enhancement of the facial features is achieved, contributing to a more balanced and harmonious appearance.
-
Natural and lasting results: Hyaluronic acid offers immediate and natural results. Although the effect is temporary, lasting approximately 12 to 18 months, its application allows for a rejuvenated appearance without drastically altering facial features.
-
Safe and minimally invasive procedure: Cheek filler with hyaluronic acid is a safe and low risk treatment. It consists of microinjections loaded with a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, which provides natural results and minimizes recovery time. In addition, the procedure is usually quick, lasting approximately 30 – 45 minutes.

PATIENT PROFILE
People with an inharmonious facial structure or who wish to increase the volume of the cheekbones to stylize their face. If they are willing to undergo surgery, the result will be definitive, and if for some reason they do not want to, they have the option of filling with hyaluronic acid, whose result will last a few months.
PROCEDURE
Cheek augmentation with prosthesis
We take measurements of the patient’s face, we advise him/her, and according to the patient’s criteria, the prosthesis is custom designed to fit the structure of his/her face and is placed in two ways. One can be through a small incision in the lower eyelids that is practically imperceptible, and the other through the junction of the upper lip and gum, inside the mouth. With this plastic surgery technique there are NO scars.
Cheek augmentation with own fat
The patient’s own fat is extracted by means of a mini-liposuction. Subsequently, the fat is processed and then infiltrated into the area to be filled, improving volume problems with a natural appearance and rapid recovery.
The infiltration is performed through a small blunt needle and does not require stitches.
DURATION OF THE INTERVENTION
- 1 – 2 hours
PROTOCOL
Preoperative
- Evaluation of the area to determine the adequacy of the treatment.
- Follow specific guidelines determined by the doctor
- CBC and tests on cardiac and respiratory status
Anesthesia
- Local and sedation
Hospitalization
- Ambulatory
Postoperative
- If they are prostheses through the palpebral route, stitches must be removed, as in a lower blepharoplasty, after 4 or 5 days.
- If they are intraoral prostheses, the most frequent, no stitches need to be removed as they are self-absorbed.
- If it is performed with the patient’s own fat, the discomfort after the infiltration is minimal and the surgery is almost painless.
- Medication if required.
- Mandatory revisions after a few days, weeks and months, according to prescription.
Convalescence
- If they are prostheses, they require 4 to 5 days of rest due to possible inflammation.
- If the with own fat requires 1 to 2 days of rest if there is swelling
- Rapid recovery
RESULTS
- Rejuvenated appearance
- Improvement of the patient’s psychological profile and self-esteem.
DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY
- Simple intervention
LEVEL OF RISK
- Under
- If it is with prosthesis there may be displacement of the prosthesis if a correct postoperative period is not followed.
- If it is with the patient’s own fat, the fat graft may be reabsorbed if the postoperative period is not followed correctly.
- In any type of surgical operation there are always the risks of any intervention: bleeding, infection, alteration of the healing process

Frequently asked questions about cheekbone prosthesis surgery
What are facial implants?
Facial implants are small prostheses designed to improve facial contour and volume while respecting your anatomy. For example: malar (cheek) implant, nasal implant and chin implant.
At what age can I have cheek prosthesis?
The ossification process of the facial bones ends between 15 and 18 years of age. It is at this age that we can assess whether the patient is a candidate for this intervention and, if so, we can evaluate the position, projection and volume required.
Where do you get the fat for cheek lipofilling?
It depends on each patient, which area has more fat accumulation, but normally it is extracted from the abdomen, the amount required is very small, the important thing is the quality of the fat to be processed and applied.
