We explain what each of these operations consists of so that you can choose the most suitable one for you.

Clínica Sanza in Barcelona, is a reference center in chin and jaw surgery.

Chin and jaw augmentation with prosthesis

The treatment of chin and jaw augmentation with prosthesis of Clínica Sanza in Barcelona, consists of placing a prosthesis in the jaw area, whose material does not cause immunological reaction and integrates with the tissues in a natural way. In this way, the projection of the chin, mandibular angles or the entire mandibular bar is increased if required.

Once in place , the result is forever, it is never lost and the profile of the face is very stylized.

Chin and jaw Lipofilling?

Before proceeding, it is important to understand what lipofilling is!

I advise you to read
this article on our website
where it is explained in detail. It is important …

If you have a good understanding of what lipofilling is, continue on to this section of the website.

The chin augmentation operation with your own fat is technically known as chin lipofilling. It is a surgical procedure that we perform at Clínica Sanza in Barcelona. It consists of a small liposuction of an area where the patient has excess fat (usually the abdominal area or legs), we process it to purify it and then infiltrate it in the desired area.

It is not usually the first choice for mandibular improvement.

It is an alternative to chin and jaw filler with biocompatible substances or chin and jaw augmentation with prostheses.

Chin and jaw augmentation with hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite

If you are not in the mood for surgery and want something faster and cheaper, then consider filling your chin and jaw with hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite.

It involves injecting hyaluronic acid into the chin and jaw to increase their volume. The amount to be applied depends on the patient’s taste. Usually 2 or 3 vials of 1 ml are used, but they can be more or something much softer and less showy if the patient wishes. As they are injections, after a few days the patient can decide to have more if he/she wants a larger volume.

It is infiltrated with injections, does not require surgery and is performed in the same office. It is absolutely biocompatible, it does not produce any type of rejection or subsequent problems in the patient’s body.

Advantages

  • It is done instantly and there is no need for a hospital
  • It is worth considerably less than a chin and jaw plastic surgery operation.
  • You can see the result instantly
  • If you are not convinced you can dissolve the result to make the face look like before using hyaluronidase, which is the antidote to hyaluronic acid. It is injected in the same way as hyaluronic acid and makes it disappear.

Inconveniences

  • The result is not definitive. It does not last the same for everyone because depending on the genetics of each person it can be reabsorbed in many more months from one person to another.

How long do the results of injecting hyaluronic acid into the chin and jaw last?

The duration of hyaluronic acid once injected into the chin and jawline can vary depending on several factors. In general, the duration of the results can range from 12 to 18 months or even longer if the product is of high quality.

Hyaluronic acid is a resorbable material, which means that over time it is broken down and metabolized naturally in the body. The rate of resorption can be affected by the concentration and cross-linking of the hyaluronic acid used, as well as the individual’s location and metabolism.

In areas that are not as exposed to movement, such as the chin and jawline, the results can last longer than in areas with movement, such as the lips.

It is important to keep in mind that the duration of results can also be affected by post-treatment care and individual lifestyle habits.

How is hyaluronic acid injected into the chin and jaw?

Hyaluronic acid is carefully injected into the skin layers using a fine needle or cannula. Sometimes several punctures are necessary to distribute the product well and obtain an optimal result.

Don’t just go anywhere. It is essential to keep in mind that learning how to inject hyaluronic acid safely and effectively requires proper training and in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy, injection techniques and the appropriate choice of hyaluronic acid for each patient. Performing these injections without proper training and experience can have risks, such as injury, swelling, bruising or allergic reactions in the patient.

At Clínica Sanza we use the best hyaluronic acid we know, the one that lasts longer, the one that gives the best results.

Beware of saving money at a low-cost center, the result will not last.

Can I socialize or work the next day?

Yes, you do not need to rest unless you have a profession with risk of hitting the area. What we advise is to avoid going to the gym for the first two days.

You may have small bruises that go away in 24 to 48 hours and minimal swelling.

If you do not like the result, it is reversible

One of the fears of people who come to cosmetic medicine offices asking for a chin and jaw filler is that they will not like the result. If you fear that your chin and jawline have too much volume or if you don’t like the shape, it can be left as it was. The most important thing with this treatment is that the result is natural and matches your face.

HYALURONIDASE ! this magic word is your peace of mind.

It is an enzyme that has the ability to degrade hyaluronic acid. In the field of aesthetic medicine, hyaluronidase is used to dissolve hyaluronic acid in cases where you do not like the result, due to complications or adverse reactions caused by hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.

Differences between filling with Calcium Hydroxyapatite or Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxyapatite are two substances used in aesthetic treatments to increase volume in the chin and jaw. The differences between the two are explained below:

1. Composition and mode of action:

    • Hyaluronic acid: It is a molecule naturally present in our skin and is used to moisturize and restore volume in the treated area. It provides natural and temporary results, as it is gradually absorbed by the body. It is applied to the superficial layers of the skin.

    • Calcium hydroxyapatite: It is a collagen biostimulator, which means that it promotes the production of collagen by skin cells. In addition to providing volume, it also has a tightening effect and contributes to the firmness of the most superficial layers of the skin. The results can be long lasting due to the formation of new collagen. It is used in deeper layers of the skin.

2. Treatment areas:

    • Hyaluronic acid: Used to augment the chin and jawline, improve the appearance of scars, rejuvenate a woman’s intimate area, correct imperfections on the back of the nose and treat fine wrinkles. It can also be used to increase volume in the cheekbones and lips.

    • Calcium hydroxyapatite: Used to restore volume to facial structures, redensify the skin and provide firmness to the most superficial layers of the skin. It can be used on areas such as the chin and jawline, but is not recommended for reducing wrinkles between the eyebrows and forehead.

3. Side effects:

    • Hyaluronic acid: It is a biocompatible and well-tolerated substance, so side effects are usually minimal and temporary, such as redness or swelling that disappear in a few days. As a substance found naturally in the body, it does not usually have significant contraindications.

    • Calcium hydroxyapatite: Calcium hydroxyapatite is also well tolerated, but caution should be exercised when injecting it in certain areas, such as the eye area, to avoid complications. As with hyaluronic acid, redness, swelling or bruising may occur at the application site, but these are usually temporary and mild..

PATIENT PROFILE

People with an inharmonious facial structure, lack of chin, with atrophy of the lower third of the face or simply people who prefer to mark the area more. If they are willing to undergo surgery, the result will be definitive, and if for some reason they do not want to, they have the option of filling with hyaluronic acid, whose result will last a few months.

Men who wish to emphasize more the masculine mandibular features.

PROCEDURE

Chin and jaw augmentation with prosthesis

The prosthesis is custom-made to fit the patient’s structure and is placed in two ways: one, through a small incision under the chin, which is practically imperceptible, and the other, through the junction of the lip and gum, inside the mouth.

Although each person has a different bone constitution, we can modify it with these prostheses that will integrate and reinforce the lower jaw bone, so as to obtain a greater resistance of the tissues to aging and flaccidity caused by the passing of the years.

Chin and jawline augmentation with own fat

The patient’s own fat is extracted by means of mini-liposuction. Subsequently, the fat is processed and then infiltrated into the area to be filled, improving volume problems with a natural appearance.

The infiltration is performed through a small incision that is sutured with a very small and unnoticeable stitch.

DURATION OF THE INTERVENTION

  • 1 to 2 hours

PROTOCOL

Preoperative

  • Evaluation of the area to determine the adequacy of the treatment.
  • Follow specific guidelines determined by the doctor
  • CBC and tests on cardiac and respiratory status

Anesthesia

  • Local and sedation

Hospitalization

  • 24 h admission

Postoperative chin and jaw augmentation with prostheses

  • Removal of stitches after 4 or 5 days if an external incision is made.
  • No stitches need to be removed if the procedure is performed inside the mouth.
  • Medication if required
  • Mandatory check-ups after a few days, a few weeks and a few months, according to prescription

Postoperative chin and jaw augmentation with own fat

  • Minimal discomfort after infiltration
  • Virtually painless
  • Medication if required
  • Mandatory check-ups after a few days, a few weeks and a few months, according to prescription

Convalescence of chin and jaw

chin and jaw augmentation with prosthesis

  • 5 to 10 days due to swelling, depending on the size of the prosthesis.
  • Fast and painless recovery

Convalescence of chin and jaw

chin and jaw augmentation with own fat

  • 2 hours
  • Daily activity the next day, although sometimes it may swell or bruise and require an extra day of rest.

RESULTS

Frequently asked questions about chin and jaw prosthesis surgery

What are facial implants?

Facial implants are small prostheses designed to improve facial contour and volume while respecting your anatomy. For example: malar implant (cheekbone), nasal implant and chin implant, apart from prosthesis or implants, the patient’s own fat or temporary filling materials such as hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite can also be placed, if the patient wants a non-permanent change.

At what age can I have chin prostheses?

The ossification process of the facial bones ends between 15 and 18 years of age. It is at this age that we can assess whether the patient is a candidate for this procedure and, if so, we can evaluate the position, projection, volume and desired shape.

Where do you get the fat for chin lipofilling?

It depends on each patient, which area has more fat accumulation, but normally it is extracted from the abdomen. The quantity required is very small, what is important is the quality of the fat to be processed and applied.

How long does the fat placed on the chin remain in place?

This fat, once assimilated by the organism, remains forever, it is a definitive and natural implant, its best indication is in cheekbones and temples. In chin and jaw we advise, better, prosthesis.

If I don't want to wear a prosthesis, what other options are there to augment or enhance the chin and jawline?

We can always resort to facial fillers, which are temporary, such as hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite. As they are injected, they do not require surgery, they are placed with a little local anesthesia and the results are immediately evident.

What is better prosthesis, fat fillers or injectable fillers to improve the chin and jaw area?

No technique is necessarily better than another, they just have different indications. In fact, it is possible to complement one with the other, i.e. it is possible to give a little projection by means of a prosthesis or a fat graft and at the same time define the mandibular ridge with injectable fillers. The indication of the most appropriate option for your case will be given by our team of surgeons after a personal clinical evaluation.

Will I have a lot of pain after chin, cheek or jaw augmentation?

No, it is an operation that hardly causes any discomfort and in case there is any, it can be perfectly controlled with a mild analgesic.

Will I be able to eat and gesticulate normally after a chin, cheek or jaw implant?

Yes, the only thing is that we recommend resting the area, that is, not to gesticulate too much or chew excessively during the first hours after the implant placement to avoid displacements.

When will I be able to sunbathe and UVA rays?

Sun or UVA can usually be used once the bruising and swelling have disappeared, which can vary from 3 to 15 days.

When will I be able to go to the pool, gym or play sports?

It is recommended to gradually resume exercise, and after two weeks of the placement you can start it, just avoid contact sports that may affect the area until about a month after the placement.

Can the prostheses be displaced?

It is rare, but it can happen. If it happens, we make a retouching, that is, a repositioning of the implant. The jaw implants, we fix them with screws because the chewing muscles could displace them. Chin and cheek implants do not require screws for fixation.
