Chin and jaw enlargement surgery with prosthesis

English subtitled video

The chin and jaw enlargement surgery with prosthesis treatment at Clínica Sanza in Barcelona, Spain, consists of placing a prosthesis in the mandibular area. The material does not cause immunological reaction and integrates into the tissues naturally. This way, the projection of the chin, mandibular angles and/or the entire mandibular area is increased as required.

Once in place, the result is permanent, it is never lost and the profile of the face is defined in a very stylised way.

WHERE DO WE OPERATE?

At Clínica Sanza we rely on the Sagrat Cor Hospital, part of the Quirónsalud group, to perform our surgical procedures.

PATIENT’S PROFILE

People with an unharmonious facial structure, lack of chin or atrophy of the lower facial third.

Men who wish to accentuate masculine mandibular features.

PROCEDURE

The prosthesis is molded to fit the structure of the patient and is placed in two ways: one, through a small incision below the chin, which is practically imperceptible, and the other, through the union of the lip and the Gum, inside the mouth.

Although each person has a different bone constitution, we can modify it with these prostheses that will integrate and reinforce the lower mandibular bone, so that they can obtain a greater resistance to aging and flaccidity.

Frequently asked questions about chin and jaw prosthesis surgery

What are facial implants?

Facial implants are small prostheses designed to improve facial contour and volume, but respecting their anatomy. For example: malar implant (cheekbones), nasal implant and chin implant, apart from prostheses or implants can also place the patient’s own fat or temporary filling materials such as hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite, if the patient wants a non-permanent change.

At what age can I get a chin prosthesis?

The process of ossification of facial bones ends between the ages of 15 and 18. It is from this age onwards that we can assess whether he or she is a candidate for this intervention and if so, we can assess the position, the projection, the necessary volume and the desired shape.

Where do they get the fat for chin lipofilling?

It depends on each patient, which area has more fat accumulation, but is usually removed from the abdomen. The amount required is very small, what is important is the quality of the fat to be processed.

How long does the fat stay on the chin?

This fat, once accepted by the body remains forever, it’s an everlasting and natural implant, its best indication is in cheekbones and temples. In chin and jaw we recommend prosthesis, better than lipofilling.

If I do not want to put a prosthesis what other options are there to increase or improve the chin and jaw?

We can always resort to facial fillers, which are temporary such as hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite. When injected, they do not require surgery, are placed with a little local anesthesia and the results are immediately evident.

What is best about prostheses, fat fillers, or injectable fillers to improve the chin and jaw area?

No technique is necessarily better than another, they only have different indications. In fact, it is possible to complement each other, ie you can give a little projection through a prosthesis or a fat graft and at the same time define the jaw rim with injectable fillers. The indication of which is the most suitable option for your case will be given by our team of surgeons once a personal clinical evaluation has been made.

Will I have a lot of pain after the chin, cheek or jaw augmentation?

No, it is an intervention that hardly gives discomfort, and in case the patient feels some kind of pain, it can be perfectly managed with mild analgesics.

Will I be able to eat and gesticulate normally after a chin, cheek or jaw implant?

Indeed, the only thing we recommend is to rest the area, i.e. do not gesticulate too much or chew excessively during the first hours of implant placement to avoid displacements.

When will I be able to sunbathe and UV rays?

Normally you can sunbathe or UVA once the bruises and inflammation have disappeared, which can vary between 3 to 15 days.

When will I be able to go to the swimming pool, the gym or do sport?

It is recommended to gradually resume the exercise, and after two weeks of the intervention you can retake it normally. Just avoid contact sports that may affect the area, until about a month of placement.

Can prostheses be moved?

It can happen in rare occasions. If this happens, we do a touch-up, i.e. a repositioning of the implant. We fix the jaw implants with screws because the chewing muscles could displace them. Chin and cheek implants do not require screws for fixation.
