Frequently Asked Questions about Scalp Lifting Surgery -FAQS

scalp lift

What is a scalp lift?

Scalp lifting, also called scalp reduction, consists of a surgical hair restoration operation that removes alopecic areas (bald areas) and stretches the scalp with hair forward to replace hairless areas.

Who is a candidate for a Scalp Lift?

Although in Clinica Sanza we carry out the most avant-garde techniques of hair micrografts which allow us great results, there are certain types of patients for whom scalp reduction or hair lifting is an excellent alternative highly recommended to cover both the crown and the entrances and advance the first line of hair in very detached fronts.

Can a scalp lift be used on scarred areas?

Yes, the scalp lifting is a good option in cases where you want to remove an alopecic scar area in some area of the head. Exceptionally, the reduction of alopecia, in certain patients with scars or after-effects of injuries or accidents, can be performed using a scalp expander, a technique that stretches the skin of the scalp that has hair to provide greater coverage in bald areas.

Can a scalp lift be combined with micro hair grafts or any other procedure?

Yes. In certain patients, scalp reduction or lifting is a very effective hair restoration method that can be performed as a single procedure to remove bald areas or in combination with hair micrografts to achieve the desired aesthetic effect and occasionally in combination with other cosmetic surgery procedures such as a brow or eyebrow lift.

When can I resume my normal activities after a scalp lift?

It depends on the extent of the procedure, although usually after 4-5 days you can do the most usual daily activities, and after a month you can do all kinds of physical exercise and sports.

What is the procedure for performing a scalp lift?

The lifting of scalp is an ambulatory procedure, that is to say it does not require internment, it is carried out with local anesthesia and a soft sedation, it can last between 1 to 2 hours depending on the extension, the removal of stitches is carried out to the 10 or 15 days of the intervention.  We take off the capillary zone and advance it to cover the alopecic or hairless zone.

Is a scalp lift a painful procedure?

No, precisely the key of this type of surgery is to carry it out minimizing the tension to preserve the hair, so the inflammation is minimal and the eventual discomfort is transitory and easily controllable with an anti-inflammatory and a mild analgesic.

Why do some people think the scalp lift is out of use?

The lack of information and the emergence of certain trends give rise to this erroneous opinion. The scalp lifting is a technique that has been modified with the passage of time and in which we use materials and sutures increasingly refined, so the results are infinitely better than those achieved a few years ago, and although the techniques of hair micrografts have also improved and are the first choice for certain patients, the hair lift is still, alone or in combination with hair grafts, an excellent alternative for a group of specific patients.

The disadvantage is that it must be performed in the operating room and the price is higher than the grafts, but the result is better to achieve greater hair density than can be achieved with micro grafts, either with the technique of FUE or FUS.
