Lip augmentation surgery | Cheiloplasty

English subtitled video

The lip augmentation that we perform at Clínica Sanza in Barcelona can be done in two ways:

  • The best known, with hyaluronic acid injections. This solution is the simplest, quickest and cheapest, but it is not definitive, it lasts for a while.
  • The less well known is technically called everting the lips. This is a small lip operation that allows the labial mucosa of one or both lips to be turned outwards in a definitive and even more natural and elegant way. It allows the recovery of the size of the lip lost over the years, the improvement of peribuccal wrinkles or the increase of the thickness or profile when someone wants it.

Clínica Sanza in Barcelona is a leading centre in the treatment of lip augmentation.

WHERE DO WE OPERATE?

At Clínica Sanza we rely on the Sagrat Cor Hospital, part of the Quirónsalud group, to perform our surgical procedures.

PATIENT’S PROFILE

PROCEDURE

There are two procedures for this intervention that depending on whether the results are temporary or definitive.

Temporary results

Through the infiltration of substances, such as the known hyaluronic acid or others, we can disguise and correct the volume deficit or improve the lip projection achieved.

The materials that we use are temporary and biocompatible with the organism, with similar consistency to the tissue in which they are implanted, thus, they are almost imperceptible to the touch. They are chemically and physically stable over time.

You can work on the lip volume or simply outline the edge and the cupid bow with very natural results. The key for a good result is the combination of the infiltrated material, the experience in its application and to do it little by little, without big increases.

We advise not to use permanent products to avoid displacements and lumps over time; neither thread nor labial prosthesis, since in the long run they can be perceptible or move unless the patient does not smile or kiss or gesture a lot with the lips.

Definitive results

With a small operation performed under local anaesthesia (as when we go to the dentist). It consists of advancing the inner labial mucosa in order to evert it outwards, without the need to infiltrate any product.

This technique is increasingly requested by patients because it is definitive, and even more natural and elegant.

Frequently asked questions about lip augmentation surgery

What is lip augmentation?

Lips may be small, thin, unfleshed, or unshaped. They may present small asymmetries or scars, caused either by inheritance, trauma or previous treatments. By means of the infiltration of certain substances it is possible to obtain more volume, to improve the form, to give symmetry, projection or to profile the lips, always maintaining a natural and aesthetic appearance.

What area of the lips can be improved with these fillers?

According to the needs of each patient, the implantation can be carried out in 3 ways: in the most posterior or internal area of the lips that contacts the teeth or gums in order to give projection and eversion; in the center or fleshy portion to increase globally and achieve volume; and/or in the mucocutaneous edge (union of the skin with the labial mucosa) to define and profile the lip or eliminate peribuccal wrinkles.

What is hyaluronic acid and what advantages does it have for lip filling?

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide that is present in human connective tissues including the skin. It is the main elastic component of the skin. It contains water (99.5%), and plays an important role in the formation of stable collagen and in the organization of the extracellular matrix. The advantages of this type of filler for lip augmentation are among others:
  • It is a natural, biodegradable and resorbable (temporary) product. Approximately 1 year depending on the product used, infiltrated volume and injection technique.
  • The implant is integrated into the tissues in a natural way, allowing oxygen and nutrients to pass through the skin.
  • It allows to maintain an adequate hydration of the skin and a characteristic turgidity of the youth, reason why the results, in lips, are aesthetically evident and above all very natural as much visually as to the tact.

Can I use this technique to improve lip asymmetries?

Occasionally there are patients who have a different lip to the other, not only between the upper and lower lip, but there may also be differences between the lip on one side and the other. These small imperfections can be very evident, and fortunately can be corrected very satisfactorily with the use of hyaluronic acid type fillers.

Does lip augmentation hurt?

It is a procedure that can be performed with anesthesic cream or local anesthesia, like at the dentist, so it is completely painless, both in the application and afterwards. If injected without anesthesia it is painful. In Clínica Sanza we advise you to use anaesthesia, like at the dentist.

Can I talk, laugh or kiss after the placement?

Once the filling material has been placed in the lip, we suggest relative rest of the area, avoiding intense gesticulation, kissing, chewing with energy during the first 12 to 24 hours to avoid displacements of the molecule of Hyaluronic acid, or inflammation. After thas impass, you can make normal movements.

I have a history of cold sores, can I have my lips filled?

Yes, but taking Acyclovir for a few days to prevent it. The filling of the product in the lips can condition temporary inflammation and sometimes a modification of the defenses of the area and therefore favor the appearance of cold sores, so we recommend the prevention of herpes in patients with a history of suffering it, and prevent it from happening.

If I don’t like it, should I have a bad year?

No. Hyaluronic acid has an antidote called hyaluronidase. If you do not like the result or you see any asymmetry we can inject hyaluronidase and will reabsorb the hyaluronic acid in 24-48h.

Are there other substances or ways to augment the lips?

Yes, we do not recommend calcium hydroxyapatite because it is harder and may create a lump. There are permanent fillers such as silicones or methacrylate, but we do not recommend them because over the years they produce deformities on the lips.

Is there a definitive increase?

If a patient wants a definitive augmentation we recommend 3 surgical techniques: 1-micro-fat graft 2- Eversion labial with advances V-Y or W-Y, that is to say, a few cuts are made inside the labial mucosa which we suture in such a way that the lip comes out and is permanently bigger. 3- Upper lip lift. Only for the upper lip through an incision below the nostrils which allows to raise and evert the lip giving more volume, but shortening the distance of the filtrum (distance between nostrils and profile of the upper lip). All these techniques are performed under local anesthesia as the dentist and on an outpatient basis.
